Some of My New Book Obsessions From 2017!

I just glanced out the window to see a snow flake drift by.

why

WHY!

IT'S TOO SOON!

*ahem*

Obviously, I haven't finished reading for the year so there is still a possibility that I'll find a new favorite book...but these are my new favorites so far:

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

Cyborg Cinderella. Let me repeat. CYBORG CINDERELLA.

And my favorite thing about these books is how well Marissa Meyer blends in the old stories and her story line. And she uses the originals (the ORIGINAL originals!)

If you haven't read the originals you can still enjoy these stories (obviously), but if you have, the stories are still unpredictable. A common problem with retellings is that you already KNOW what is going to happen. And HOW it is going to happen.

But with these retellings...you just don't.

Her stories include retellings of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Snow White, and probably more...

(and oh my gosh. The ships!)

Faro's Daughter by Georgette Heyer

Ok, so I discovered Georgette Heyer this year. (Actually, one of my friends came up, swung the book at my head and said "read it, READ it, READ IT!" So I read it. But hey, that is how book people discover a lot of books)

Georgette Heyer writes (wrote) regency romance novels. Perfect place to get your Jane Austen fix. I liked Faro's Daughter the best out of all of them because it was so...different.

I mean, regency novels are the kind of a acquired taste. But this book is one that I think a lot of people would enjoy.

P.S. I Like You by Kasie West

The only type of romance I read is the kind that is stupidly predictable and cheesy. It could be a triple cheesy pizza it's so cheesy. And unbearable cuteness.

This book matched all my requests.

Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Ok, this is actually a sequel. But while I like Illuminae, it's not a "favorite."
Nic is the cutest and his cousin is amazing.
(I have a theory that she is the reason behind "the lollipop song" being stuck in the elevators and PA System. I mean, she's humming/singing it through out the book...)

(Also, apparently "the lollipop song" is SUNG in the audio book...)

Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

CRIMINALS!!!!!

*cough*

I mean, bold and daring heists! A loyal and faithful crew that is like a family!
(I mean, some of them start out by hating each other, but their all buddy-buddy in the end...)

And Kaz is the cutest. I know I literally just said the Nic was the cutest
(Ok, Nic is actually "cuter." But Kaz is so sweet.)

Like that time he tortures that guy because he stabbed Inej and flings his body off the boat?
So cute!

Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin

Honestly, the worst thing about this book is there is a AmAzInG guy named Luca...

And I know a Luca IRL.

And it is kind of weird to go around saying "Oh My Gosh. Luca is goals." Or any squealing over Luca.

Because if anyone heard...We'd have to deal with the, "What? You have a crush on Luca?"

My friend and I have taken to calling him "Luca-motorcycle-dream-boy" so that they aren't mixed up.

The Art of Feeling by Laura Tim

The boy who can feel no pain and the girl who is in constant pain.

I really liked the difference between them and this book made me laugh so hard as I read it. And I'm not sure why...I'd be reading on my bed, read some random line and start laughing until my stomach hurt. And all the while I'd be thinking "Why are you laughing? It wasn't even that funny."

Caraval by Stephine Garber

MAGIC. SUPER. CREEPY. SCAVENGER. HUNT.

Basically?

Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

Killer sea horses based off Irish Mythology and other myths about killer sea horses?
Count me in. Plus there was food.

Am I the only one who, after reading the word "Puck" to many times, saw the name "Mutt" and decided that here after he should be called "Muck?"

And I didn't realize I was doing it until it was too late.

Oh well

What were some of your favorite books from this year?

  1. All of these books that I've read are so good. Luca-motorcycle-dream-boy is definitely goals. I read Blood for Blood (finally) and it shattered me.

    1. Very shatter-y.
My friend is still mad about me giving her Blood for Blood and Wolf by Wolf to read. Apparently, most of the books I've given her involve her OTP being crushed...

    1. I had a similar problem with Scorpio Races and Sean Kendrick.
Except everyone in the books always called him by his full name, so we just give his full name and nobody mixes them up.

I highly suggest you read Faro's Daughter. You'd love it.

I'm totally going to be stealing books off your blog...

  7. I loved Cinder, I still haven't read the rest of that series. I need to read so many of these.

  8. I'm still reading or rather, I'm on book 3 of the lunar chronicles. I didn't like book two and it sort of derailed my reading of the series but I will finished it, somehow.

still undecided about six of crows, I want to read them but at the same time, I read too many reviews and now I have too high expectaions of both books but perhaps I'll read it next year.

I usually read books years after they are published so I can never tell when they are published but one of my favorite from this year is 'hunted' by megan spooner which I'm fairly certain is released this year.

    have a lovely day.

    1. I actually JUST finished reading Hunted. It was probably my favorite Beauty and the Beast retelling from this year.

Yes! Yes, you HAVE to read Six of Crows! And keep going with The Lunar Chronicles...It gets better. (Winter is my favorite)

    1. I read The Raven Boys this year, but it didn't really click for me. Scorpio Races on the other hand was amazing.

      (Plus its a stand alone)

  11. I read the first two in the Lunar Chronicles last year and loved them but for some reason haven't continued. I'm fixing that next year! Maggie Stiefvater is an author I really want to read though I'm thinking I will start with The Raven Boys though you have me wondering if I should start with Scorpio Races. How can I resist killer sea horses? That's amazing!

    1. I would start with Scorpio Races. It's a stand alone, so if you end up not liking her writing style you won't have to stop half way through a series/force yourself to finish
