Open Road Summer: Book Review with Lilah from Musical Writings! Sort of?

It's the thing.

You know the thing. When you don't have any good books to read so someone lends you one and then you read it and love it so you have to write a review and so you invite someone to make commentary on your post for no other reason then they were the someone who lent you the book?

Yeah, it's one of those things.

*raised eyebrow at the corner of the room while I wait for SOMEONE to arrive...*

*poof*

 Say hello...

*Lia does not say hello because she's a rebel*

Now, Lia is here from the realm of The Singing Writer. She loves music, memorizes a ENTIRE MUSICAL SOUNDTRACK in what... 3 days?

Yes, yes I did. :D

Right. That. So when ever I read a music based book, as soon as I find out it's about musicians I stop reading to go yell at her and say "LIA! I FOUND ANOTHER MUSIC BOOK!" (The last one I suggested to her, PS I Like You by Kasie West was also a little freaky because it was like Kasie West had been spying on Lia...) And Lia collects music-y books...so when I need a book to read, I occasionally get a music-y one thrown at my face.

This was one of those books.

(Except it was not tossed. We take very good care of our books during such exchanges, thank you very much.)

I did almost throw Crooked Kingdom back in her face, because it was depressing…

Anyway… We’re talking about Open Road Summer. Open Road Summer is about two best friends. One of them is a super famous country singer and she’s going on tour! So she drags her best friend along. And then the musician's guy friend shows up and la de dah. You know the drill.

I really enjoyed this book and the characters were amazing, but I would like to point out that if you read a lot of band/musician-summer-tour-with-guy stories then this may seem a bit cliche to you…

The plot actually wasn’t that predictable to me...I didn’t know how things would end up when I started it, I didn’t see every plot point coming up, I didn’t see the ending playing out like that…

The Characters were amazing and I loved them all.

I really liked how Regan’s relationship with her step-mother acred, which I wasn’t really expecting…

I loved the bickering between Liam* and Regan.

(*ummmmmmmmmmmmm his name is Matt......)

*ahem*

I loved the bickering between Liam Matt and Regan. (But apparently not enough to remember his name?)

“Strawberry milk,” I say, eyeing him as we head toward the counter. “Really.”
He turns to me. “Do you have something to say about my snack selections?”
“Nope.” I fall into line behind him. “I just didn’t realize you were a middle-school girl going to a slumber party.”
“And I,” he says, plunking his strawberry-fest down on the counter, “didn’t realize you were a soccer mom justifying her chocolate craving with the fact that raisins are a fruit.”

And the songs! Lilah and Matt are song writers so we’re given beautiful little gems sprinkled throughout the story.

My personal favorite was one of Matt’s songs. You know. The jazzy one.

“Do you want me to beg you?
Do you want me to say please?
Then this song is the rest of my pride, girl.
This song is me down on my knees.
Just give in, give in to me, girl.
I’ll give you everything I got.
I won’t give up, give up on you, girl.
Till you’re giving me a shot."

Lia’s favorite is one of Matt’s too. The one he sings about his mom and not giving up on people and *sobs* its so beautiful.

Have you read Open Road Summer? Are you gonna read Open Road Summer? Do you have a favorite song from the book? Do you know any good books with musicians in them?
